Wales Field Visit – Cwm Farm, Aberhafesp
Pro Silva Britain Field Visit to Cwm Farm, Aberhafesp, Powys

Coed Cwm (9.9ha) was planted by the Forestry Commission (now NRW) in 1957 with a mixture of conifer species on an ASNW site retaining good native woodland hotspots. The woods were acquired by the farm as a FC disposal in 1995 by the present farmer’s father to recover a previous ownership and to deal with adjacency. Duncan Davies and his children are now taking charge of the woodland with the objective that the woods pay for themselves and generate income. The sale of forest products and a considerable investment in chicken sheds are seen as essential contributions to maintaining a viable farm income. A local harvesting contractor is thinning the woodland with a view to transformation to CCF under the supervision of Mike Richards. Selective thinning and felling produce timber sold to local markets and for own use on the farm. The woods have been the backdrop of two recent Farm Woodlands & Income Generation events lead by Welsh Government, WoodKnowledge Wales, Mentera and Farming Connect.
